Greek Week (Post 10)
Greek Week is coming up here at Washburn University. This is a week long event where greek life is celebrated with a different event each night. All sororities and fraternities participate in this week long event trying to earn points toward their greek week total.
Some of the events include dodgeball, lip sync, trivia, and greek olympics. Activites involved in greek olympics are egg race, 4x100, tug a war, and balloon toss. The way to earn points is to win the events and have as many people from your greek chapter attend each event.
At the end of greek week, the chapter with the most points from all events wins greek week. On Sunday after the whole week is over there is an award ceremony for all chapters and trophies handed out for the winning teams. To win greek week is a big deal. It shows that you are the best and strongest chapter on campus.
Also at the award ceremony they announce who won homecoming week from the previous fall. Overall, this is a super fun week to be a apart of and support. Some of the best memories that you will never forget come from greek week. Events like this are a big reason to become apart of a greek chapter.
Pledging (Post 9)
Sororities and Fraternities are already on the prowl for recruiting. In fact, it's always recruiting season because recruiting never stops. Just by wearing your letters around campus, or putting a car decal on your car you're recruiting. When people that aren't in greek chapters see that, some become interested. That is why when you're wearing your "letters" you should always be putting forth the best representation of yourself.
Rush for women is in the fall, and men usually check out fraternities in the Spring before their freshman year of college. Sorority recruitment is very stressful and intimidating of both sides. Ladies that are in the sorority are nervous to interview girls who are rushing and girls rushing are always nervous to meet so many new girls. If girls are themselves, it is easier for everyone to find something in common. Rush usually lasts a week just because there are so many sorority houses to see.
Men who are looking to join a fraternity usually go to a couple fraternity parties so they can meet the men and see where they fit in. If they get asked back and liked that house as well they may get a big extended to them. Men can get as many bids from as many houses but in the end have to accept one bid and that is the fraternity house they will pledge too.
I hope this helps everyone understand a little bit more about how the process of getting into a sorority for fraternity works.

Darty (Post 8)
It's that time of year again.... DARTY season!! Darty stands for "Day Party." The weather is beautiful this time of year which gives fraternities and sororities another reason to party. Greek chapters live for these days. Things you may catch at a darty is free alcohol, music, mud pits, sand volleyball, and so much more. Fraternity are the main ones who will host these parties. Some parties can be themed and students really get into it. University of California is known for some of the best dartys. I personally think they have a huge advantage with their weather being mostly mild all year round. Other top darty schools include, Indiana University, Penn State, University of Mississippi, University of Texas, and many more. Due to dartys, Spring is one of the more fun times of the year for greek life.

Spring Break (Post 7)
Spring Break is over and now greek students and chapters are looking for the next big and upcoming event. All greek chapters have a certain number of events or annual events a year that members look forward too. Some of these event include, themed date parties, socials, formals, and so on.
Fall is for Dad's day because it fits perfect with the big football tailgates. Dad's love to come out and support their son or daughters school! There is also usually a fall formal with other themed date parties in between.
Spring is for mom's day along with another Spring formal! Never fear, greek members are never bored in the Spring due to March Madness bringing everyone alive. So whether you are looking for to the next big event, party or even counting down the days of school just know Spring is packed with many fun events!

Destinations (Post 6)
It is that time FINALLY, SPRING BREAK!!!! College students have been counting down the days since Christmas Break was over, and Spring Break plans have been made since school started. There are many thriving Spring Break destinations for college kids to attend. Greek Chapters often take big trips together with joint fraternities and sororities to make for the ultimate party. Most of the Spring Break destinations are filled with lettered flags, Yeti's fruity drinks, and beer. Here are the top 10 Spring Break destinations for Greek life chapters.
1. Cancun, Mexico
2. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
3. Miami Beach, Florida
4. Panama City Beach
5. South Padre Island, Texas
6. Acapulco, Mexico
7. Montego Bay, Jamaica
8. Nassau, Bahamas
9. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
10. Las Vegas, Nevada
As you can see Mexico is a bit hit due to the legal drinking age being 18. Happy Spring Break!!

Greek Chapters (Post 5)
Spring is in the air and that means sororities and fraternities are already looking ahead to next years fall recruitment as well as pledging. Greek chapters are already on the purge to find new people to better their chapter for the upcoming year. Sororities and fraternities both do things completely different.
Frats do most of their recruiting in the spring and have PNM's (potential new members) come to some of their parties to see if either the frat or PNM thinks the house would be a good fit for them. They do this in the Spring due to having to fill up their house for the fall. Most chapters require their pledges to live in the house their first year of college. They make this required to build brotherhood bonds quick as well as delegating pledge duties easier. It takes a lot to become a official member of a fraternity.
Sororities are now starting to plan and train their new members for fall recruitment. Fall recruitment is a BIG deal. Chapters will practice and study their butts off so they can recruit the best group of women. There are songs to learn, how to talk to people, and also know every possible question about your chapter. Recruiting is one if not the biggest parts of chapters and takes a while to prepare for.

Sterotypes (Post 4)
Greek life is very caught up in stereotypes. Some are true and many are misconceptions. Here are 5 misconceptions of stereotypes within greek life organizations.
1. They pay for their friends... (very true, we pay) but the friendships that are built are priceless
2. They are just there to party... Yes, fraternities and sororities love to party, but they do way more than just party. Each chapter requires a certain amount of study hours and community service hours. 3. Don't believe the Hazing Hype... Hazing is not allowed in most greek life chapter. Fraternities are accused of hazing more than sororities. If there is hazing it is minimal and done secretly. For sororities, instead of hazing after initiation, new members are showered with gifts.
4. Greek life is all about socioeconomic status... Again this is not true, sometimes living in the frat or sorority can be cheaper than living in the dorms. Everyone is eligible to pledge or earn a bid.
5. You have to pretend to be someone else to get in... Yes, most frats and sororities have common interests, but once you get in you find your friends that are most like you and have everything in common. A frat or sorority has lots of little cliques.
The greek life system is weird and complicated but there is more to it than all these stereotypes!

The Best (Post 3)
This weeks blog post features a particular school. According to bestcollegereviews.org, Washington and Lee University is the number one greek life school in the US. No, this doesn't mean number one partying greek campus. It means they're best known for having most involvement. Washington and Lee University has lots of history due to it being founded in 1749 and named after our former president George Washington. This school is located in Virginia and is the 9th oldest institution. At this University there are 13 fraternities and 8 sororities. Greek life on this campus sponsors over 26 community service activities. 62% of the school is involved in greek life and they have only had 22 criminal offenses and those were between the years of 2011-2013. Having all these things makes Washington and Lee University the top greek life school!

Greek (Post 2)
There are over 5,500 greek life chapters in the US. To start small, I want to inform you about the greek life chapters we have here at Washburn. We have 5 fraternities here on campus along with 3 sororities. (Hopefully adding another sorority into the mix soon!) Most of the sororities right now have their house close to maximum full if not completely full. Fraternities are always adding! At Washburn the greek life system tends to be a different atmosphere then a typical D1 school. The chapters here are very family orientated and everyone knows everyones name. I think knowing everyone's name is something special that you can't usually get at a bigger school in sororities. This does not happen at D1 school due to their being over 200 people in the chapter. Overall, I think Washburn has a great greek life system.

Rush is a time where you get to tour all the chapters as well as meet some of the girls in those chapters. If you are a male you may be meeting with other fraternities before you arrive on college campus. Men are Pledges. You can expect weekly updates on a new topic regarding greek life as well as a featured sorority or fraternity of the week. Whether you are apart of greek life or not I hope to interest you in this blog!
